Asst. Coach Mike Simmonds: Offensive Line

A former NFL offensive lineman and an ultra-successful HS coach in Tampa, Mike Simmonds was named offensive line coach at USF on Janaury 22, 2007 after one season as a graduate assistant with the Bulls. Although 2006 marked Simmonds first season on a college football staff, his experience is immense and has already impacted USF’s efforts on the field. A former NFL offensive lineman and a 14-year veteran of high school coaching with three state finals appearances, Simmonds has much to offer.
Mike Simmonds began coaching as an assistant coach at Hillsborough in 1992. In the six years there, the team had a 54-14 record, and was a 1996 state finalist.
He started coaching Jefferson in 1998, going 2-8 in his first season, he then reached the playoffs in his next seven straight seasons. The team played in the 4A state title game in 2002, and returned to the 3A state title game in 2004. He has a playoff record of 17-7, and a 74-29 overall record in his eight seasons as head coach. In 2002 he was also voted the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Coach of the Year.
Simmonds was a 10th round draft choice by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 1987, and a starting guard for them in 1989. He signed with Chargers as a plan-B free agent in 1990. He played under O-line coaches Pete Hoenor (ISU, Bears), Larry Beightol (Bucs), and Alex Gibbs (Chargers)
He attended Indiana State University where he started 46 games. He was a two-time All-Gateway conference First team, and a First team All-American. He was also team captain, offensive MVP, and Most Valuable Offensive lineman.
