USF officials announced that Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Wally Burnham is leaving USF to take the defensive coordinator position at Iowa State

Associate head coach and defensive coordinator Wally Burnham is leaving USF to take the defensive coordinator position at Iowa State, USF head coach Jim Leavitt announced the departure on Tuesday afternoon.

“Wally did a great job for us, we will sorely miss him and his wife Barbara,” said Bulls Head Coach Leavitt. “I am absolutely proud of everything he has done here and the success he has brought to USF. We wish him luck at Iowa State and I know that he will always be successful because of his tremendous character.”

With Burnham as defensive coordinator, USF has ranked in the top-30 in total defense in six of the last seven seasons, including a No. 10 ranking in 2008.

Burnham, USF’s longest tenured assistant, just completed his ninth season with USF and spent eight of those as defensive coordinator or co-defensive coordinator, and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2007 season.
