Pack Pride talks with Tampa (Fla.) Wharton safety Jairus Jones about his top two schools.
Bulls Still in the Mix with Jairus Jones?
Jones is a 6-foot-1, 205-pound three-star safety who just finished his senior season for 9-3 Wharton. On defense he recorded an amazing188 tackles, with four interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, and also blocked 3 field goals and 1 punt.
"I start at safety, rotating from free to strong throughout the game," said Jones. "I also drop to linebacker on a lot of our plays. I play linebacker against running teams and safety against passing teams."
Jones is also an offensive weapon at both running back and receiver for Wharton with 18 total touchdowns. He recorded 12 scores though the air with 847 yards on 47 receptions, and also chipped in 6 rushing scores.
"I'm always on the field," said Jones. ‘The only time I am really not on the field is kickoffs and punt returns."
USFNation reported a month ago in Quick hits that the Bulls had interest, but at the time he didn't have a USF offer and there didn't seem to be mutual interest. Now the Wharton standout claims over 13 offers including North Carolina, Michigan State, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, and recently an offer from the Bulls.
"The Bulls offered me about a month ago, before the Chamberlain game," said Jones "I talked with coach Gregory and coach Leavitt on the phone, he offered me and said they really like what they've seen."
The Wharton standout also attended the Bulls last home game where they beat UCONN and got an upfront look at the Bulls defense.
"I like the way they play defense. Their safeties play like linebackers, and come down in the box a lot. It's a lot like how we play in high school."
It may seem late for the staff to offer a local talent, but Jones said the Bulls offered him once they found out he was willing to play linebacker as well as safety, but are they to late?
"No the Bulls are still in the mix," said Jones. "I wanted to wait until after the season was over anyways. That way I can get to get serious about recruiting."
With plenty of schools competing for his services does Jones have a short list of favorites?
"I'm talking to N.C. State and Michigan state the most. They're probably my top two schools right now. After that they're all about even. I really don't have a top five right now."
As of now Jones doesn't have any official visits set yet and is in the process of doing so, but don't be surprised if he doesn't use one of them on the Bulls.
"I wasn't planning on taking any visits in Florida and wanted to go out of the state for all five," said Jones. "USF is right down the road and I can see them whenever, and don't need to make an official to see them, but we'll see."
Jones said he doesn't plan on making a choice until the end of January or even signing day, but will be making a short list over the next month. His decision may be a couple months away, but Jairus does know what he's looking for in a school.
"I'm looking for a program with good academics and good coaching," said Jones. "Anyplace that gives me the best chance to make it to the pros."
