The start of preseason practice next week means that the Bulls have concluded
another strenuous off-season conditioning program under the guidance of USF Strength Coach Ronnie McKeefery.
"We try to challenge the team mentally and physically through the off-season conditioning program,"
said Coach McKeefery. “We want them to know that after going through winter,
spring and summer, they can say I put my time in, “I can handle what ever you throw at me.”
Off-season conditioning is broken into two phases; winter and summer.
Winter focused on adding size and strength. “We’re lifting more then we’re running in the winter,” aid McKeefery. “We’ll run or hit the matt three days a week, closing with some speed ball.”
Summer is all about total conditioning,
and getting back into football shape. “In January we only run once a week,” said McKeefery. “In the summer time we run 4 days a week, every day we lift we run.”
- In summer conditioning the team does a 4-day split, two days a week the team does upper body, three days a week they do lower body.
- Two days of linear speed and two days of
lateral speed, meaning straight ahead running and lateral agility.
- Monday & Thursday is upper body and straight ahead speed days, and Tuesday’s and Friday’s are lateral speed and lower body strength.
"Overall
the guys had a good summer. They trained extremely hard and are dedicated to
trying to get our first Big East Championship, that was the focus all summer,
and the entire off-season,” said McKeefery. “We’re tired of being one win away
from winning the conference championship. We want to own it, and we want to earn
it, and that’s what we’ve been preaching all along.”
