3-Star Auburn Commit Sets Visit with USF

George Baker is one of the most explosive and fastest players in the state of Florida. He committed to Auburn in September, but has recently opened things up and has set a visit with USF. Read on for all the details. Stay informed with USFNation.com

George Baker is one of the most explosive players in the state and the 5'11, 175 pound CB/RB from Miami is also considered one of the fastest. Baker was a big part in leading Archbishop Carroll HS into the playoffs where they lost to Tampa Catholic 28-21 last week.

"I had a pretty good season this year," said Baker. "On defense I had 40 tackles and three interceptions, but teams didn't throw at me much, and on offense I had 1,643 yards on 209 carries with 19 touchdowns."

The Archbishop Carroll product has excelled on both sides of the Ball, but says he will play corner at the next level.

"Schools are looking at me to play corner," said Baker. "I'm a very physical player and a shut down corner. I can cover and provide run support too."

Baker showed elite athletic abilities in combines this summer, running as fast as a 4.37-40 yard dash and posting a 39" vertical. The talented 3-star athlete drew plenty of interest and committed to Auburn back in September after a visit.

"I went up there and liked everything and had a good time and committed as a soft verbal," said Baker. "But when I got home and talked with my mom for awhile she thought I should take other visits and see what my other options were, what other schools have to offer, and make sure what's best for me."

Even though the two-way standout committed to Auburn back in September, he recently has opened things up.

"Besides Auburn, I'm looking at USF, UCF, Rutgers, FSU, Florida, and Miami," said Baker who has set several visits including an official visit to USF.

"I set the visit up with South Florida last week when Coach Scott came by and visited me," said Baker. "Usually I talk to Coach Rachel. Both were real cool with me and seemed down to earth."

Baker has close to a full visit schedule lined up with a visit to Rutgers this weekend (Dec 7), UCF on Jan, 11th, and USF on January 25th, and knows what he's looking for in a program.

"Basically the relationship I have with the coaches there, the atmosphere and playing time," said Baker. "My mom wants me to look at all of that."

Does Baker's mom have an influence on where he plays college ball?

"My mom always tells me that whatever school I decide on is my decision, and I need to be comfortable with it."

The versatile Baker admits that he doesn't know a whole lot about USF, but wants to learn more on his visit.

"I talked to coach Rachel, and I'm aware of their corner situation and that they run a base cover-two.

Baker has been getting it done in the classroom with a 3.21 GPA and scored 740 on the SAT the first time, but just retook the test this Saturday.

The Scout.com 3-star prospect mentioned that he probably won't make a final decision until after he takes all his visits, and it will most likely come down to signing day.

My Take:
It's not a secret that corner is a priority for the Bulls this recruiting class, and the staff has been bringing in some top recruits for visits. Baker has amazing speed and has been recruited by the Bulls for sometime now, but his early commitment to Auburn kept him off the radar. That has changed since he has opened things up and set a visit. Auburn still has an edge, but it may not be a very big one.
