USF officials announced that freshman running back Jamar Taylor has received a hardship waiver from the NCAA and will immediately be eligible to compete this season.
During today’s weekly press conference Leavitt made the announcement, and added that the freshman will see time this Saturday in the Bulls home opener against Elon.
“We did get some good news today. Jamar Taylor, running back transfer from Alabama, did get a waiver, he will be able to play and you’ll see him play Saturday night, said Coach Leavitt.”
Taylor is currently listed as 4th on the Bulls depth chart, and yesterday USF released an amended two-deep roster with a second running back position including:
RB-A: Ben Williams, Mike Ford, Mo Plancher
RB-B: Aston Samuels, Jamar Taylor, Shawn Cannon
The 3-star prospect from Lakeland enrolled early at Alabama this spring, but transferred to USF after the semester to be closer to home and enrolled this summer. Before committing to Alabama, Taylor was considering Florida State, LSU, USF and Florida, and Iowa.
Taylor, 5’10-200 pounds and runs a in the 4.6 range was one of the best running backs in the state of Florida. He shared the Lakeland backfield with Scout.com five-star running back Chris Rainey, a Florida commit. Taylor lined up as a fullback but can play either position. They left Lakeland HS with three consecutive Florida 5A state championships and a winning streak of 45 games.
As a senior Taylor who was injured for part of the season with a high ankle sprain rushed for over 1,000 yards and scored 13 touchdowns. He was named Class 5A Third Team All-State and made the Lakeland Ledger First Team All-County team. As a junior splitting time with Rainey he finished with 1, 217 yards and 27 touchdowns.
Jamar has all the tools a team looks for in a back, he’s big, strong, and has got the speed. He's a good back coming out of the backfield and has got great hands. Getting the waiver adds even more depth and gives the Bulls options at the position.
