You would figure that a team that wore mostly green would get the luck of the Irish today. Apparently not, if you give up 11 hits, commit three errors, and walk a bunch. The USF Bulls (14-7, 1-1) fell to the Pittsburgh Panthers (7-9, 1-1) Saturday night 5-2 in front of 568 fans.

Both runs by the Bulls came on solo shots by shortstop Walter Diaz and second baseman Dexter Butler. Both homeruns could’ve easily stayed in the park if the wind wasn’t blowing out.  Pitcher Daniel Thomas seemed to be pitching himself out of a jam every inning, but managed to pitch himself out of them by making quality clutch pitches and pulling off three great pickoff moves.  All three errors came from the left side of the field, including Third Baseman Addison Maruszak.  The game was tied at 2 going into the ninth, when Thomas was pulled for Davis Bilardello.  Bilardello walked a couple of Panthers and surrendered three runs in the ninth to put Pitt ahead for good.

USF Head Coach Lelo Prado was obviously not happy with losing to a team he believes they should never lose to.  “We can’t lose to Pitt.  I told them before the game if you let teams that are not very good hang around, they will come back and beat you…  we gotta get guys who know how to play the game and know how to come to the ballpark every day to play.”

Here are some game notes and observations:

Attendance:  568

Starting Lineup

  1. Walter Diaz- Shortstop
  2. Ty Taborelli-  Left Field
  3. Addison Maruszak- Third Baseman
  4. Brandin Daniel- First Baseman
  5. Dexter Butler- Second Baseman
  6. Nick Cardieri- Designated Hitter
  7. Joey Angelberger- Right Fielder
  8. Braulio Pardo- Catcher
  9. Mike Consolmagno- Center Fielder

Pitcher:  Daniel Thomas

Observations

  • Scouts from Kansas City, Detroit, Houston, and Philadelphia were at the game.
  • Kansas City scout was there to check out pitcher Daniel Thomas.  He liked his “live arm” and “throws strikes”.  Not to mention how he recovers.
  • Pitt starter, Paul Nardozzi, maxed out at 87 mph.
  • Wind was blowing out towards left field, shifting to right field as game went on.
