Entering Saturday’s game, many expected to see a match up between two of the best freshmen quarterbacks in the nation. It did not take too long to realize that only one was ready to go. Kerry Meier will miss the game due to a hurt arm. This will only help the Bulls try to improve their 0-2 record against the Big 12. Read on for a complete game summary of the first half. On the Bulls first play from scrimmage, Grothe hit a diving Marcus Edwards for a 29 yard gain. A few plays later Grothe hit S.J. Green for a 12 yard completion. Then Ean Randolph took the ensuing handoff for a 21 yard gain. The Bulls were able to reach the three yard line and then trouble arrived. After being stopped three times they had one last chance to score. On fourth and 2 the Kansas defense stopped Matt Grothe for no gain to take over on their own 2 yard line.

After forcing Kansas to punt on their initial possession, the Bulls tried to put together another decent drive. Grothe completed a 17 yard pass to Amarri Jackson. Unfortunately this would be the only play they were able to move down the field on. Thanks to a strong performance by the defense, the Bulls were able to come off the field unscathed.

Grothe hit Taurus Jonson for 15 yards on the first play following the punt, but that was the only highlight of another drive that ended with a punt. Kansas responded with a 19 yard run by Brian Murph followed by a 22 yard pass completion by Barmann.

After a personal foul penalty was called on USF, Kansas found themselves at the 19 yard line in perfect position to strike. The result was a 19 yard completion to Marcus Henry, who then fumbled the ball away at the goal line as he dove in the end zone. Chris Robinson quickly dove on the ball to give the ball back to USF and eliminate the red zone threat. In the first half, Grothe completed 8 of 13 for 108 yards and has rushed for 276 yards while linebacker Stephen Nicholas has nine tackles.

The next threat for the defense of the Bulls came on the Jayhawks ensuing drive. On third and 11 from the 32 yard line, the defense stripped Barmann of the ball. Grothe responded by driving the Bulls all the way to the 29 yard line before throwing an interception at the two yard line. The two teams found themselves tied up at 0 entering halftime.
