Bulls QB Named Big East Player of the Week

Bulls freshmen quarterback Matt Grothe, who led USF to their third straight victory 24-17 over the UCF Golden Knights this past Saturday, has been named the Big East Conference Offensive Player of the Week.

Against UCF, Grothe completed 23 of 33 passes for 341 yards, with 3TD’s and 1 INT, while running 22 times for 70 yards. On the Bulls opening drive, after a Trae Williams interception, Grothe drove the Bulls for 79 yards on 7 plays capped by a 7 yard TD to Marcus Edwards for his first score. The second touchdown didn’t come until a two-yard touchdown pass to RB Ben Williams with 11:05 left in the 4th quarter. His third touchdown of the day was the game winning 27-yard pass to Ean Randolph with 3:20 left in regulation.

His 341 yards is a freshmen record at USF, and his 3 touchdowns ties a USF freshmen record set by all-time leading passer Marquel Blackwell.

In his three straight victories this season, Grothe is 45 of 72 for 647 yards (62.5%), with 6 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, with a 157.2 passer rating, and rushed 47 times for 213 yards (4.5avg.) and 1 touchdown.

Bull’s receiver Taurus Johnson and defensive end George Selvie were named to the Big East honor roll last week. However, Grothe is the first Bull to be named a Big East Player of the Week this season.
