CARDS PREPARE FOR HOME OPENER
After going 2-1 in Florida to start the season, the University of Louisville baseball team opens play at Jim Patterson Stadium on Wednesday.
The Cardinals will play Eastern Kentucky University (1-2) in the home opener at 3 p.m. Admission to the game is free and it will mark the first game in the newly renovated Patterson Stadium.
Junior Dace Kime, who pitched in the opener against Indiana in relief, will get the start for the Cardinals. Chris Cervantes will pitch for the Colonels, who trail the overall series with U of L 59-48-1.
The Cardinals have won the home opener in five of the past six seasons with the lone exception coming in 2011.
CARDS HOME FOR A WHILE
The EKU game is the start of 36 home games this season and the beginning of eight straight home games for the Cardinals.
U of L won't play on the road again until a March 6 game at Eastern Kentucky and then its 12 more straight at home until a March 26 game at Indiana.
The 36 home games is the second most in school history behind only the 1980 season when U of L had 43 home games.
THOMPSON GETS BIG EAST HONOR
U of L junior right-hander Jeff Thompson was named Big East Pitcher of the Week after a sensational outing on Saturday against South Florida.
Thompson, who is from Floyd Central High School, allowed just four hits and no runs in five innings. He had 12 strikeouts against the Bulls.
The strikeout number was a record for a single game in the Big East/Big Ten Challenge. He helped the Cardinals to a 10-1 victory.
STURGEON A KEY PLAYER
During the preseason, U of L coach Dan McDonnell called outfielder Cole Sturgeon one of the "key players" on the Cardinals' roster.
Sturgeon, a junior from Owensboro Catholic High School, was 4-for-11 last weekend with a .500 on-base percentage and three RBIs. He had a bases loaded triple with two outs in the first inning against Purdue on Saturday.
"He's one of those college baseball players that you just call a baseball player," McDonnell said. "He plays with a certain kind of toughness.
"He can play all three positions in the outfield and his uniqueness is that he can be a pitcher. He's just so competitive."
