Change is coming to the Connecticut football coaching staff.

George DeLeone will remain on the Connecticut football coaching staff but his two-year stint as offensive coordinator is over.

DeLeone, the target of heavy criticism for UConn’s poor offensive performance, will continue to serve as offensive line coach and will add the title of associate head coach to his list of responsibilities.

Former Cincinnati wide receivers coach T.J. Weist (pronounced WEEST) has interviewed for the offensive coordinator position at UConn and is the leading candidate at this time. The hiring of Weist, 47, could be completed soon, a source said. His resume includes three seasons as offensive coordinator at Western Kentucky (2003-06).

DeLeone, 64, previously served as associate head coach under UConn head coach Paul Pasqualoni at Syracuse. UConn ranked 110th in total offense last season with 318 yards per game. Cincinnati, 10-3 last season, threw for 238.8 yards a game. UConn passed for 230.4 yards but also threw interceptions.

DeLeone issued a statement Tuesday through the UConn athletics communications office, saying, “I continue to be excited about the direction of our offense and I look forward to continue to work with the offensive line – a position group that I have been passionate about my entire coaching career. The new role of associate head coach is a new part of my job that I am eager to take on.”

Based on the job description UConn has posted, it appears Weist will also coach the Huskies’ wide receivers.

UConn must also fill the positions vacated by defensive coordinator Don Brown, who left for Boston College, and running backs/special teams coach Clayton White, who is now at North Carolina State.

A leading candidate for the defensive coordinator position has not been identified, a source said.
