Iowa CITY, Iowa - On the same day Erik Campbell confirmed through Twitter he no longer was coaching at Iowa, Miami graduate assistant D.J. Hernandez announced Thursday on the social media that he would be joining the Hawkeye staff:
Packin so i can move to Iowa ASAP to begin my new coaching position wit the Hawkeyes.Thx coach golden n evry1 at UM for gr8 experience.— DJ Hernandez (@DjHernandez14) @son_of_abitz I will be coaching the Tight Ends bud. Excited about the opportunity, I am looking forward to getting after it. #Hawkeyes— DJ Hernandez The addition of Hernandez makes sense. His brother, NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez, was coached by current Iowa assistant, Brian Ferentz, with the New England Patriots. D.J. Hernandez is an alumnus of Connecticut as is Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. David Raih coached Iowa's tight ends last season. It was his third and final season as a Hawkeye graduate assistant per NCAA rules. It's likely that D.J. Hernandez, who helped with the Miami wide receivers, will step in for Raih, who could end up taking Campbell's spot. That job opening must be advertised for approximately six weeks before a hiring can be announced publicly. Iowa commitment Damond Powell said on Thursday that Campbell, who recruited him, was leaving the Hawkeyes according to what he was told by Brian Ferentz. The university still has not made announced the coaching departure, but Campbell accepted congratulations and appreciation from fans on his Twitter account. Iowa has told the media that it will not be addressing coaching changes anytime soon, as evidenced by this tweet from Pat Harty of the Iowa City Press-Citizen: Iowa SID Steve Roe said today he doesn't anticipate any confirmation or announcements about football coaching changes coming any time soon.— Pat Harty (@PatHarty) January 4, 2013 Powell said Thursday that Brian Ferentz would be taking over the Hawkeye wide receivers. Sources on Friday said that the recruit misunderstood what he was told by Iowa and that the younger Ferentz would remain as offensive line coach. After a long run of stability in the Hawkeye staff, it's become unsettled during the last year or so. Four full-time assistants - Campbell, Norm Parker, Ken O'Keefe and Rick Kaczinski - have left the program in that time. In Ferentz's first 13 seasons as head coach, he only a total of six full-timers - Bret Bielema, Chuck Long, Pat Flaherty, Joe Philbin, Ron Aiken and Carl Jackson - were the only assistants to leave Iowa in the first 13 years Kirk Ferentz served as head coach.
