Iowa CITY, Iowa - On the same day Erik Campbell confirmed through Twitter he no longer was coaching at Iowa, Miami graduate assistant D.J. Hernandez announced Thursday on the social media that he would be joining the Hawkeye staff:

His brother, NFL tight end Aaron Hernandez, was coached by current Iowa assistant, Brian Ferentz, with the New England Patriots. D.J. Hernandez is an alumnus of Connecticut as is Iowa Head Coach Kirk Ferentz. David Raih coached Iowa's tight ends last season. It was his third and final season as a Hawkeye graduate assistant per NCAA rules. It's likely that D.J. Hernandez, who helped with the Miami wide receivers, will step in for Raih, who could end up taking Campbell's spot. That job opening must be advertised for approximately six weeks before a hiring can be announced publicly. Iowa commitment Damond Powell said on Thursday that Campbell, who recruited him, was leaving the Hawkeyes according to what he was told by Brian Ferentz. The university still has not made announced the coaching departure, but Campbell accepted congratulations and appreciation from fans on his Twitter account. In Ferentz's first 13 seasons as head coach, he only a total of six full-timers - Bret Bielema, Chuck Long, Pat Flaherty, Joe Philbin, Ron Aiken and Carl Jackson - were the only assistants to leave Iowa in the first 13 years Kirk Ferentz served as head coach.
