Marquette jumped out to a 17-3 lead in the opening minutes leading up to the first media timeout of the game and all was looking well until LSU closed out the half on an 11-2 run to cut into the 45-33 Golden Eagles halftime lead. Marquette led by as many as 21 points during the first half.
Following the break, LSU came out on fire tying up the game at the 14:57 mark. LSU shot just 33% in the first-half and was finally starting to connect on their long range shots as the game went back and forth all throughout the second-half. LSU finished the game shooting 42% from the field, but Marquette was consistent all throughout 49% on their field goals.
LSU used a 2-3 zone that stifled the Marquette offense at times, but Junior Cadougan came up big scoring 15 of his 17 points in the second half. Marquette’s leading scorer was Davante Gardner with 19 points on the afternoon and converted on many crucial plays during the closing minutes in the win.
Gardner finished strong inside on a layup with 1:22 remaining in the game and would follow up by knocking down free throws to extend the advantage. Marquette as a team was 24 of 25 from the free-throw which was good for 96%.
Vander Blue and Jamil Wilson also finished in double-figures in scoring with 17 and 11 points respectively. Blue was feeling it from the field in the game and Wilson nailed a three-pointer from the corner with 8:26 left in the game to swing the momentum back in MU’s favor after both teams traded runs.
Andre Stringer was one of five LSU players to score in double-figures for the Tigers and finished with a game-high 20 points.
Today’s game marked the return of Marquette guard Todd Mayo who was academically ineligible the first 11 games of the season. Mayo had 2 points in his return missing 4 three-pointers, converting a pair of free throws and committing one turnover. Mayo also chipped in 2 steals and had an assist in 10 first-half minutes.
Marquette improves its record to 8-3 on the season as LSU drops to 7-2. The Golden Eagles now have a week off to enjoy Christmas and are back in action on December 29th when they are back at home vs. North Carolina Central for a 1 p.m. tip.
