Sarah Barshop will be covering Marquette Basketball as a member of our student staff. Here is her review of the MU v UMBC game by the numbers.

6 – Number of consecutive games Davante Gardner has reached double digits in points

Junior Davante Garnder has scored at least 12 points in every game this season, including 13 in the game against UMBC. The forward also had a career-high five steals in the game. Before his 14 points against Colgate to start the season, Gardner's last double-digit point total was in the second round in the NCAA tournament against BYU.

Buzz Williams said that the competition between redshirt senior center Chris Otule and Gardner has been great for both of the players because it has motivated Otule to improve his offense, and Gardner to improve his defense because neither wanted to be substituted from the game for the other.

77 – Number of consecutive games Vander Blue played before tonight

Junior Vander Blue missed the first game of his Marquette career. The guard sat out with a knee injury that he suffered in Marquette's game against USC on Wednesday afternoon.

Williams said after the game that he hopes Blue will be back to play on Thursday against Florida. Blue ran on an anti-gravity treadmill yesterday, and shot this afternoon. He also went through warm-ups tonight, and looked fine throughout.

Buzz also said Blue has been as consistent as any player he's had other than Jimmy Butler. The junior hasn't missed a practice, and is very durable.

51 - Number of points Marquette scored in the second half

The Golden Eagles outscored Maryland-Baltimore County 51-22 in the second half, which was the most they have scored in the second half this season. Marquette's previous second half high was the 42 points they scored in their season opener against Colgate on Nov. 11.

Marquette's 51 points came largely on a 31-3 run midway through the second half. The run started with 15:13 left in the game, and ended at the 6:48 mark. That run put the Golden Eagles up 67-36, and effectively gave Marquette control of the game. In the larger run, the team also had 11-0 and 20-0 runs.

9 – Number of players that scored for the Golden Eagles

Williams played 10 players against UMBC, and all but one – senior point guard Junior Cadougan – scored for Marquette.

The coach said that he didn't know if he could continue to give that same number of players as many minutes as they had against Maryland-Baltimore County, but that it would be nice if the Golden Eagles could "continue to play those guys," but the minutes would probably become more normal a month from now.

3 – Games this season that Jamil Wilson has led the team in points scored

Redshirt junior Jamil Wilson scored a game-high 15 points for Marquette. This comes on the heels of his 19-point career-high against USC in the Maui Invitational, which was also a game-high. The junior also lead the Golden Eagles in Marquette's season-opener against Colgate.

Williams said in his post-game press conference that Wilson is "a good player," and that "when his talent and heart are on the same page, he's really, really good." The head coach noted that when Wilson strictly relies on talent, he "just looks like a really, really good athlete that doesn't play hard enough to win."

Williams went on the say that Wilson may be "as good as any we've had at that spot as his career unfolds," but that he's got to play hard because when he doesn't he's not very good.
