The Connecticut baseball team made it to the ninth inning Tuesday but couldn’t beat the rain or the Rhode Island Rams. The Huskies were forced to settle for a 2-2 tie at Dodd Stadium in Norwich.

If the weather cooperates on Thursday, the Huskies will begin their final series of the regular season with a game against Notre Dame in Storrs.

Here’s the release from UConn athletics on Tuesday’s tie:

NORWICH, Conn. – The University of Connecticut baseball team hosted the University of Rhode Island in a 2-2 tie at Dodd Stadium on Tuesday afternoon. It was the first tie for the Huskies since a 2-2, 16-inning affair against Holy Cross on March 22, 2011.

The game went into a rain delay with two outs and the bases empty in the top of the ninth inning. After a two-hour delay the game was officially called by the umpires. Connecticut’s record now stands at 27-24-1, while URI is 29-23-1.

Junior RHP Pat Butler (Chatham, N.J.) held the Rams hitless through his first four innings of work. In the fifth, Rhode Island struck for a pair of runs. The Huskies came back with a run in both the fifth and sixth innings to tie the game 2-2. Redshirt-junior Billy Ferriter (Nashua, N.H.) snapped a 0-14 skid with a lead-off single and later scored from third on a fielder’s choice hit into by junior second baseman LJ Mazzilli (Greenwich, Conn.). The second run came in on a bloop single over third by freshman DH Connor David (Cheshire, Conn.) that plated freshman left fielder Eric Yavarone (North Haven, Conn.), who had singled earlier in the inning.

Butler pitched six innings, allowed two runs on three hits, while walking four and striking out three. He became the 22nd consecutive UConn starter to not win. Redshirt-freshman RHP David Mahoney tossed 2.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit, in relief.

For the Rams, Redshirt-junior righty Bobby Dean went 5.1 innings in the start, scattered seven hits and struck out five, while allowing both runs. UConn outhit URI, 7-4, but left 10 runners on base.

The Huskies take the field against Notre Dame for the final series of the regular season, with game one at 3:00 pm at J.O. Christian Field on Thursday, May 17. Tickets are still available for Friday night’s game at New Britain Stadium for just $5.
