USF kicks off mid-term signing period with 5

Today was the first day that mid-term JUCO graduates could sign with D-1 schools, and USF officially added five new members to its football family on Wednesday. The Bulls received LOI's from five JUCOs: OL Chandlor Mathews & Lawrence Martin, DE Tevin Mims and DBs Fidel Montgomery and Josh Brown. All five players are expected to enroll for classes next month and take part in spring practice.

The Bulls made a big haul of JUCO prospects with five committing and today USF officially announced that they added five junior college transfers on Wednesday. The mid-year enrollees include two offensive linemen, Lawrence Martin and Chandlor Matthews-York, two defensive backs, Joshua Brown and Fidel Montgomery, and defensive end Tevin Mims. All five are expected to enroll for the spring semester, participate in spring drills and will have two years of eligibility starting in 2012.

"These five young men have a chance to be solid additions to our roster. We have a veteran group returning and we wanted to bring in some young men that could help us fill some holes on the depth chart," said Holtz. "We feel we've addressed some need areas and this will help our depth as we go through winter workouts and into spring practice."

Lawrence Martin is a 6-foot-4, 290-pound offensive lineman at Merced College in Calif. He redshirted last season after spending the 2010 season at offensive tackle for the Blue Devils, where he earned first-team Region II All-California honors and was named first-team All-Golden Gate Conference. Prior to Merced, Martin played in 10 games at Georgia Military College In 2009. Martin, who's originally from Daytona Beach,  was a four-year letterman and all-state selection at Seabreeze High School.

Chandlor Mathews-York is a versatile 6-fot-4, 295-pound lineman that played in 18 games over the last two seasons at Pearl River Community College in Poplarville, Miss. He saw action in nine games last year at tackle and earned all-region honors, while helping the Wildcats average 455 total yards per game and was awarded the Dobie Holden Memorial Scholarship in honor of the late Dobie Holden. As a freshman in 2010, Mathews played in nine games. He played his high school ball at St. Stanislas in Bay St. Louis, Miss.

Joshua Brown is a 6-1, 190-pound corner at Arizona Western CC in Yuma, Ariz.  Brown tallied 21 tackles, a TFL, an INT and six PBU while helping the Matadors to an 11-1 record and a berth in the NJCAA National Championship game.  Prior to AWCC, Brown played in seven games at Trinity Valley Community College in 2009, then redshirted before playing his sophomore season at Arizona Western Community College. Coming out of Lancaster high school in Texas, Brown was a highly coveted prospect coming out of high school and was ranked as one of the Top 100 players in the state and one of the top cornerbacks nationally.

Fidel Montgomery is a physical 5-foot-11, 183-pound defensive back at Southwest Mississippi Community College junior. Montgomery posting 121 tackles in 2011, which tied for the fifth-most nationally at the junior college level. Montgomery also added a TFL, an INT, three PBU, three forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. He recorded 25 tackles as a true freshman in 2010. He's also a dangerous return man, posting 13 kickoff returns for 313 yards (24.1 ypr). Montgomery played his prep football at Marianna High School in Florida.

Tevin Mims is a 6-foot-4, 250-pound defensive end at Navarro College. He helped lead the Bulldogs to a 10-2 record and a Southwest Junior College championship after posted 19 tackles, four sacks, seven TFL and three PBU in 2011. Mims singed with Texas out of high school, playing in four games as a true freshman in 2009 before redshirting in 2010 before transferring to Navarro. Coming out of high school Mims was an all-state and two-time all-district selection at Stony Point High School, and was ranked as one of the nation's top 20 weak-side defensive ends, and the 16th-ranked prospect in the state after his recorded 122 tackles, 19 sacks, 49 TFL and 23 pressures during his final two prep seasons.
