Lovejoy's athlete Rico McWilliams is a 6-foot, 170 pound prospect that played both ways for the Wildcats in Hampton, GA. He has received post season honors at both cornerback and wide receiver for the 2010 season after catching 6 touchdowns on offense while recording 2 interceptions, 3 forced fumbles, 35 tackles and also stripped the ball from a receiver and took it for a defensive score.
"I'm an athlete and can play on either side of the ball, but most are recruiting me at cornerback," said McWilliams. "I like cornerback but it doesn't matter to me, I just want to play."
Schools have taken notice of the Georgia prospect as he's been receiving plenty of interest and landed his first offer from a BIG EAST program.
"I got one offer from South Florida," said McWilliams. "I'm excited about that offer, they have a good football program and I really like the coaches."
McWilliams is being recruited by USF Coach Steve Shankweiler and already has a bond with the Bulls coach.
"He's a real good coach and I talk to him like two times a week" said McWilliams. "We talk about everything and talk real not just about football. When I need someone to talk to, I call coach Shank. I've only known him for a little bit, but feel like I've known him for a long time. Last week my grandma died and we talked, and then this week my grandpa died and I gave him a call and he tried to cheer me up. He's been there for me and I really like him."
As to what position, the Lovejoy athlete says that the Bulls have been talking to him as an athlete, but more on the defensive side of the ball.
"South Florida has been talking to me about corner the most" said McWilliams. "I'm an athlete so I'll talk to the wide receiver coach also."
McWilliams has never been to South Florida before, but that will change this weekend.
"I'm going down there this Friday and will catch their spring game on Saturday," said McWilliams. ‘I'm really looking forward to making the trip and checking them out."
Even though he's never been to Tampa he does know a little about the program
"I'm starting to learn a lot about them, and saw them beat Clemson in their bowl game" said McWilliams. "I like the way they play defense and know that they've put several DB's into the NFL. I know they had a corner that went in the first round 2-3 years ago and plays for the Cowboys (Mike Jenkins).
"I want to go down there and catch one of their practices and watch some film and learn all about their defense" said McWilliams. "I've spoken to their DB coach once, but I'll speak to him more when I go down there."
Being from Georgia, McWilliams said he doesn't know any current Bulls but does know a few future Bulls.
"One of my friends plays at Grissom HS, Ty Turner, he's a tight end that committed to them," said McWilliams. "I also played against the running back from Stephenson Willie Davis and he's heading there too."
Besides USF, McWilliams said he's been receiving a lot of interest from other programs
"I'm hearing from Kentucky, Clemson, Wake Forest, Illinois, Alabama, FSU and the Florida Gators" said McWilliams. "I like to hear from LSU, because I'm form Louisiana, but I haven't talked to them yet. I've already taken visits to Clemson and to Wake Forrest and both were real nice."
It's early in the recruiting process, but McWilliams said he has a short list of schools standing out with one out in front.
"I have South Florida as my number one, they're showing me a lot of love," said McWilliams. "Then I have Tennessee, Clemson and Florida."
McWilliams is strong in the weight room and in the classroom as well, carrying a 3.6 GPA and will take the ACT this June. He also knows what makes him a good football player.
"I'm an athlete and I'm competitive and aggressive on the field," said McWilliams. "I'm strong too and bench 300 pounds, squat 385 and power clean 235 pounds. When I was at Auburn I ran a 4.45-40.
