Fort White may be a small school, but they have a player with big time talent in A.J. Legree, a 6-1, 180 pound wide receiver/defensive back that's a prospect to really keep an eye on for 2012.
Legree is a multi-sport star for Fort White in football, track and basketball and received accolades in all three, but football is where he'll be playing at the next level. Legree was an accomplished two-way player as a junior with 21 catches for 290 yards and 6 TDs on a run oriented offense. On defense he played corner and safety and registered 37 tackles, 2 interceptions, 1 sack and 8 PDs on defense.
"I can play anywhere on the field, but I like receiver more," said Legree. "I like the competition and getting the ball in my hand and making somebody look bad. What makes me a good receiver is that I have a receiver's mind set, I have a height advantage, good hands and speed and quickness to go with it."
Schools have been taking notice of the talented athlete, with one BIG EAST school showing the most.
"Every thing's been going real good, I've been talking to USF and they been real interested," said Legree. "Other schools have been showing me interest too, but not like South Florida have been."
Legree said that the Bulls wanted to see some film and once they got it, he received some big news through his coach.
"USF said they were going to offer me," said Legree. "I actually found out through my coach Demetrick Jackson. They're recruiting me to play receiver."
"I recently sent them my film and that's what they were waiting on," said Legree. "Once they saw it he told me that they wanted to offer me. I'm very excited! That was my first offer."
The Bulls have been looking at Legree for some time now and he's being recruited by USF receiver coach Phil McGeoghan.
"I've been talking to the USF receiver coach and he was saying a lot of good stuff and how he wants me down there," said Legree "He seems like a cool coach and I'm real interested in them right now."
The Fort White standout says he knows a fair amount about the Bulls program and has seen them play on TV.
"I know few good things about them and saw them play on TV against Florida and seen them play several other times too,' said Legree. "I'm looking forward to finding out a lot more."
Being from the Lake city region Legree said he doesn't know any current Bulls, but does know of a few players that will be.
Legree is an accomplished student as well with a 3.7 GPA and scored a 16 on his ACT as a sophomore, but just took it again. That has garnered some interest including some from the Ivy League.
"USF was my first offer and I'm very excited to have gotten it from them," said A.J. "Hopefully there will be more to come."
He may not know when he'll be making a decision, but the Fort White standout does know what he's looking for when he makes is college choice.
"I'm looking at academics first, I'm hard on academics, so definitely that," said Legree. "I also look at the football program, how they are as a team and where they're heading."
As to what's on tap for the talented prospect, he hopes to take some visits including one to South Florida.
"I'm pretty sure I'll be visiting USF!" said Legree. "I want to see them and they said something about a junior day. I'm not sure though. I also like to see some of the other Florida schools as well."
